Perumda Bali Wants to Strengthen GGF Cavendish Partnership

The Bali Regional Public Company (Perumda) visited the Great Giant Foods (GGF) plantation in Terbanggi Besar, Central Lampung, Lampung Province after establishing a collaboration in planting Candesih Bananas with PT Nusantara Segar Abadi (PT NSA) since 2019.

“All this time, we know about Great Giant Foods at a glance from videos and photos during discussions with NSA Bali friends. This visit certainly answers our curiosity about how GGF Lampung manages modern plantations, factories and production,” said the Main Director of the Kerta Bali Regional Public Company, Saguna Nyoman Kami Artana while at the GGF Lampung Training Building, Tuesday (21/2).

Accompanied by NSA Bali’s Head of Operations, Rahmat Hidayatullah Sofyan, Banana Senior Manager, Aris Wahyudi, GGF Corporate Communication, Indra Ardiyanto, Packing House and Banana Harvest Manager PG1, Edwin Bahari directly saw the process of harvesting pineapple fruit, packing process of Cavendish Bananas, and the process packing Crystal Guava (Guava).

We, Artana, said that his visit with the team greatly added insight into modern plantation management. Because there is little land in Bali, traditional gardens are not as modern or professional as in GGF.

With the permission of the Governor, this program will continue. The community is increasingly seeing evidence of the success of this collaboration, including the Creating Share Value (CSV) program partnership with farmers covering an area of 10 hectares in Bangli and Gianyar Regencies, he continued.

According to Us Artana, there is an opportunity for this cooperation pattern to be integrated with the agro-tourism model. So far, tourists come to Bali to enjoy the beaches, mountains and other tourist objects. He thinks this can also be a new tour in Bali, where people can come to see the neatly arranged banana gardens while enjoying their bananas.

“Besides Agrotourism, Edutourism can be done because campus practitioners or school students can know that there is science and technology being implemented. I think in the future in Bali there will be agrotourism and education about plantations,” he joked.

Bali has a Governor Regulation (Pergub) regarding the utilization and potential use of local products such as fish, fruit and vegetables. The Governor always appeals to the hotels there to use native Balinese local fruit.

“I think this is good for GGF to develop other commodities such as pineapple, avocado and durian, because hotels are ready as offtakers. There are many superior fruits in Bali such as mangosteen, salak, which sometimes produce a lot after a big harvest, the price of which falls after harvest has not been maximized,” he said.

Rahmat added, with the existing garden, he was able to produce 4,000 boxes per week. Approximately one third of the demand in Bali can be met and the shortfall is still supplied from GGF Lampung.

Bimtek In-Line Inspection Quality Control

Lampung Quarantine Center provides In-Line Inspection Quality Control Technical Guidance (Bimtek) training at PT Great Giant Pineapple (PT GGP) as a quarantine measure during the production process in order to issue a Phytosanitary Certificate to fulfill the requirements of the export protocol free of disturbing organisms plant (OPT) required by the destination country.

The implementation of the training activities was attended by the Head of the Lampung Agricultural Quarantine Center Donni Muksydayan, the Lampung Agricultural Quarantine Plant Quarantine Sub-Coordinator Irsan Nuhantoro, Technical Advisor for Plantation and R&D Fauzan, Banana Senior Manager Aris Wahyudi, and Crop Development Manager Margo Tri Laksono.

Irsan Nuhantoro, explained that one of the aims of the Technical Guidance for the In-Line Inspection program was to give the Authority of the Quarantine Center to PT GGP to carry out independent inspections.

“To get the In-Line Inspection program, Quarantine trains personnel at the company how they can carry out quarantine duties to inspect products to be exported. All are assessed, must meet a standard value above 7.5 to pass certification, “said Irsan.

Those who pass the certification have the right and can represent Quarantine duties at PT GGP to carry out inspections and make decisions on whether the product is suitable or not for export. That’s why Quarantine conducts In-Line Inspection Quality Control technical training guidance, he added.

“This makes it easier for PT GGP because the company is no longer waiting for inspection services from Quarantine but can carry out independent inspections; all we have to do is apply for a printed certificate which will speed up the process. So this is part of simplifying the Quarantine service process and every time a Quarantine export shipment does not have to be present,” Irsan explained.

Aris said the request for training for Quarantine was aimed at preparing certified internal company cadres who would be tasked with assisting the quarantine inspection function in an effort to ensure that there are no plant-disturbing organisms until they are sent to export destination countries.

“In-Line Inspection is carried out by the company itself through those who have been trained and certified. This team functions as a similar stage with quality control, related to OPT,” said Aris.

Group guests arrived at the world’s largest pineapple processing company and were received at the Library room of the Training Center Building. Ery Tamalagi and his entourage were introduced to GGF through a short video showing the company’s profile.

The Special Staff of the Minister of Agriculture and the Quarantine team were warmly received by Technical Advisor for Plantation and R&D Fauzan, Banana Senior Manager Aris Wahyudi, and Crop Development Manager Margo Tri Laksono as well as accompanying the inspection of the Banana Packing House and pineapple plantation in the Plantation Group 1 (PG1) area.

Ery Tamalagi, said that in the history of the establishment of the Republic of Indonesia, in 2022 the export value will be the highest and in 2023 we are targeting it again because there have been three export movements and GGF is part of it.

“The Ministry of Agriculture must thank PT GGP for the countless legacies that have been left behind. Apart from being a part of the company’s contribution to increasing Indonesia’s exports, so far the company has also shared shares with farmers through a partnership program,” he said.

The Ministry of Agriculture has the task of designing how agricultural policies can generate benefits for society. PT GGP’s partnership with farmers has been extraordinary. Not just a business but also animate many people, he continued.

“Agriculture is always developing, PT Great Giant Pineapple has done Forward, Independent and Modern as the motto of the Ministry of Agriculture. This has been implemented correctly here. Agriculture cannot work alone. Of course the company’s collaboration with Quarantine friends is clear, so they can export quickly,” said Ery.

One of the things that is also a source of pride and a superior program that is gaining popularity is creating shared value (CSV) where the company’s success wants to be transmitted to partner farmers. Partnerships in Tanggamus Regency, Lampung, more than 100 farmers have partnered with PT GGP to develop Mas bananas and in other provinces such as Bali, East Java, West Java and Aceh.

No less important is the cassava plant. Even though currently it is no longer the main producer of cassava, the company still releases superior types of cassava from the results of the company’s R&D research. “This year we are in the process of releasing cassava which can be harvested after 7 months of planting. Even though it’s young, the starch content is quite good,” concluded Fauzan.
