The Role of FE Behind the Success of GGF Buah Fruit Production

Great Giant Foods (GGF) through the Department of Farm Equipment (FE) functions to process the planting land needed by plantations. Land cultivation is the process of changing the nature of the soil by using agricultural tools in such a way, so that planting land is obtained in accordance with the needs for plant growth.

Every year FE can provide quality land ready for planting for the needs of pineapple, banana, cassava plants, and several other needs such as Research & Development (R&D) planting area which reaches 7,000 hectares. “Land preparation activities are carried out according to the plantation budget for land that must be prepared in a year,” said Farm Equipment Manager Suparno.

The results of the processing of planting land with quality standards have been jointly determined by the plantation. This concerns the prerequisites needed by plants so that FE has quality standards as a reference. The land processing activities carried out are chopping, plowing, finishing harrow and ridger. There is much more to be done to adjust the final tillage to a standard.

“Quality is a fixed price for operations in FE, because operators are working and if the quality is not appropriate then they do not get a premium. This pattern has been carried out for years and the results can meet the quality standards determined by the plantation. The quality of the work is assessed by the Plantation Quality Control (QC), not the FE Department,” said Suparno.

Suparno continued, that the obstacle that is usually felt in FE is during the rainy season, many land management schedules cannot be followed and have the potential to be postponed so that they are not in accordance with the schedule. Usually, in such a situation, you have to sacrifice quality, of course, with plantation approval, because the priority for planting is number one there.

This year, FE has prepared 25 tractors for land cultivation in the three Plantation Groups, and has reserved bulldozer units with unit operating costs that are quite expensive. “I hope that as much as possible, land processing activities are completed with tractors, because bulldozers have quite high operational costs, especially the cost of fuel and spare parts for equipment is difficult,” concluded Suparmo.

Latentol as a Means of Control of Fruit Flies

One of the superior fruit commodities cultivated by Great Giant Foods (GGF) Terbanggi Besar, Central Lampung is crystal guava. The distinctive taste makes crystal guava fruit favored by the people of Indonesia and abroad. This has the potential to become the prima donna of export commodities from Indonesia.

There are 360 hectares of GGF crystal guava production area in Terbanggi Besar with an average annual production of 8,675 tons. One of the causes of decreased quality and production of crystal guava is fruit fly insect attack. Through the manufacture of devices can be a way to control the fruit fly.

Research and Development (R&D) GGF made a breakthrough by making one type of medicinal product to control fruit flies, which was named Latenol. Latentol is specially made with a distinctive aroma to snare male fruit flies. The aroma of Latenol can be smelled up to a radius of 10 Km.

Latenol has been released by R&D since October 2021 with a total production of 23,750 pieces (pcs). Latenol production in a day reaches 500 pcs with packaging in one pack there are 5 pcs. In 2022, the Protection R&D Division will produce 7000 pcs of Latenol per month based on the plantation’s demand.

Through the application of Latenol, GGF can save Rp. 840 million per year compared to the use of conventional trapping drugs from factory products. “Latenol has a cost of production of Rp. 6 thousand. If you calculate the plantation needs of 7000 pcs / month, the savings can reach Rp. 70 million per month, “said M. Basuki Sustainable Agrimaterial Development & Protection Manager.

The use of Latenol is very easy by using a wooden block hanging inside a mineral water bottle with holes for fruit flies to enter. The bottle is filled with enough water so that the fruit flies are trapped in the water and die.

“From what has been done, 12 percent of the catch is more than the factory product drugs that were used previously. In a hectare, as many as 20 pcs can be used with a maximum duration of use of 2 months,” concluded Nur Fadila, the Protection R&D team.

Great Giant Foods (GGF) welcomed the visit of the Mayor of Pangkalpinang at GGF Terbanggi Besar, Central Lampung. The arrival of Pangkalpinang Mayor Maulan Aklil and representatives of the Cattle and Poultry Farmers Association in Pangkalpinang City was held on Thursday, January 20, 2022. The Mayor’s delegation was received directly by the Finance, Accounting & IT Manager of PT Great Giant Livestock (GGL) Ferdy at the Training Center Building.

Before conducting a field visit to see firsthand the process of breeding and fattening cattle at PT GGL, Ferdy explained about the process of PIR Cow partnership pattern with the community. “Essentially PT GGL provides assistance, provides feed, and farmers carry out care and maintenance. At harvest, the cows will be returned to PT GGL as a market guarantor,” explained Ferdy.

Ferdy said that livestock has a very big opportunity. National meat consumption per capita is 2.57 kg per year, far below Malaysia and the Philippines which reached 8 kg, and Australia was the highest with 14 kg per year per person. The breeding business of cattle is very much affected by infrastructure.

If you learn from the problems faced by cattle breeding businesses that are integrated with oil palm in Kalimantan. that the biggest problem is transportation. So that the resulting cattle have a hampered sales process. Responding to the plan, Maulan Aklil gladly accepted that PT GGL could realize a cow partnership scheme with the community.

“We are happy to accept if there is an offer for this collaboration, the most important thing is that it does not have bureaucracy and all kinds of things that are long or complicated. The funding for Bank Sumsel-Babel is okay, everyone is ready to help through KUR and the guarantee is the mayor,” said Maulan Aklil, Mayor of Pangkalpinang, Maulan Aklil.

Said that coming to PT GGL to study, as mayor will be accountable to the community. A land of 60 hectares is ready for cooperation, if it continues there will be many other lands. Investment over the last three years in Pangkalpiang has come in at almost IDR 2 trillion.

Managing Used Mask Waste at GGF

The use of worker masks is getting higher, this is related to vigilance against the Covid-19 pandemic which positively indicates worker awareness for risk protection is quite good. Used masks can be a cause of disease or a medium for transmitting viruses. This of course will be very dangerous, especially the virus that causes Covid-19.

The Great Giant Foods (GGF) Occupational Safety and Health Management System (SMK3) takes steps to reduce health risks due to the careless disposal of used masks in company areas. In the GGF Area, all workers must play a role in managing used masks because they can be a source of disease transmission. This is because the number is very significant and comes from housing or workers’ mess.

“Medical masks that come from health clinics, or masks that were used during the isolation period due to being positive for Covid-19 are collected and sent to third parties who have licenses or have permits in accordance with the requirements required by the Ministry of Environment,” said Head of SMK3 GGF Arief Fatullah.

Used masks that are not used by Covid-19 survivors but are used as prevention from the transmission of the Covid-19 virus are not sent to third parties, but are collected specifically in closed places provided by the General Service section in all mess and residential areas of each Plantation Group company. .

Through the management of used masks, it is hoped that they can potentially reduce the risk of transmission due to the misuse of masks. Meanwhile, all residential areas, especially in PG2, are required to sort out mask waste from trash or other waste.
